Earlier this fall, a truck that was transporting spent egg-laying
hens to a slaughterhouse was traveling north on California's
Interstate-5 when a compassionate motorist saw a hen fall to the
highway. After calling 911 from her cell phone, she witnessed three
more hens fall out over the next half hour. The truck was pulled over
by the California Highway Patrol, charged with "spilling a load" and
eventually allowed to continue to the slaughterhouse.
As the defendant's court date approaches, Farm Sanctuary, a NY- and
CA-based farm-animal protection organization, is asking ASPCA News
Alert readers to help have the man additionally charged with animal
cruelty.
Please write a polite letter to:
and urge him to add animal cruelty charges to case #200731. Point out
that chickens are not inanimate objects, but sentient animals who are
indeed covered by the anti-cruelty law.
