Dear Ms. Natale:

On behalf of United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate treatment of domestic fowl, I am writing to you, via Certified Mail, to express our vigorous support for the campaign being waged by Compassionate Consumers to get Wegmans to replace its battery-caged hen operation with a cageless operation and, in any case, to stop selling eggs from battery-caged hens.

Of all the diseases, filth, and misery documented on animal factory-farms, the battery-cage operations in which hens are forced to live in order to mass-produce eggs for human consumption are the most appalling. Wegmans exemplifies this cruelty.

A few years ago we incorporated into one of our videos portions of footage taken inside a Wegmans Egg Farm building which showed the squalor and suffering to which Wegmans hens were being subjected unbeknown to the public. Recent footage obtained and disseminated by Compassionate Consumers in the film, Wegmans Cruelty, shows the same ugly conditions of filth, untreated sickness, and abject suffering of Wegmans’ laying hens trapped in Wegmans’ dirty encrusted cages and toxic ammonia filled sheds.

Ms. Natale, we are urging Wegmans to take a stand on behalf of these birds and as a good-faith pledge to your customers that Wegmans is a company with the strength, integrity, and confidence to get rid of an indefensible animal confinement system and show firm moral leadership. The campaign against Wegmans’ caged-laying hen operation is not going away; rather, the campaign against Wegmans’ cruelty to hens is mounting. Please eliminate your caged-hen operation, and stop selling eggs from battery-caged hens. May we count on Wegmans to do the right thing? I hope that we can.

Thank you very much for your attention. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Karen Davis, PhD, President
