Re: Your sale of rooster feather hair ornaments: Please stop it.

Dear Mr. Conseil:

We appreciate the assurance Aveda’s been sending to customers who are asking you please to honor and implement the mission of Aveda and your promise that Aveda merchandises only plant-based beauty products. While we’re glad to hear that the Scott J Salon Spa has removed rooster feather hair extensions from their menu, we are VERY CONCERNED that you show no intention of implementing a clear policy prohibiting the sale of animal products in your outlets – whether they be contractors or directly owned by Aveda.

Rooster feather hair extensions are products of ANIMAL CRUELTY. The roosters from whom these feathers are extracted are warehoused in filthy cages. They are not “humanely euthanized.” They are GASSED TO DEATH WITH CARBON DIOXIDE – A SLOW AND PAINFUL FORM OF SUFFOCATION.

We request a written commitment that Aveda will not permit the display or sale of animal products including rooster feather hair extensions in any of its stores. Otherwise, we must regretfully continue to inform people that Aveda is not a conscientious and ethical company after all. I hope this won’t be necessary. We prefer to praise Aveda for living up to its mission to provide only products from plant sources rather than from violence to animals. Thank you for your attention. We look forward to good news from you.

Sincerely,

AVEDA’S FORM LETTER TO COMPLAINTS ABOUT RETAILING ROOSTER FEATHER HAIR ORNAMENTS:

“Thank you for taking the time to contact us.

“Aveda has always strived to bring wellness and beauty into the lives of our guests, while caring for the world we live in. The Aveda Mission and the way professionals in our network and company employees live it every day is unique in the industry.

“Recently, we became aware of feather extension services being used in our network that we feel do not align with Aveda’s Mission. As each salon and spa that carries our products is independently owned and operated, our role is to serve as their product partner. As partners we work with the salons that carry Aveda with merchandising, business building techniques as well as with cutting-edge education for their stylists and technicians. Each salon operates under their independent policies and procedures, often with the recommendations of the Aveda Corporation, however, final business decisions are their responsibility.

“You will be pleased to learn that your emails and phone calls have been received as Scott J Salon Spa has removed feather extension services from their menu. We hope you will feel empowered to bring topics such as this to our attention in the future and sincerely hope you will continue to look to Aveda for all your beauty needs.

Sincerely,

Sarah
