I was asked to write something about my sponsored hen Iris, and to send my favorite picture of her. I don’t have that picture. My favorite photo of Iris would have been of her pecking the ground with the other chickens at UPC. But by the time I met her, Iris didn’t do that anymore. Iris died on October 15, 2010 during surgery, due to her second bout of being egg bound. Fortunately, before this, she spent her last days with care and love at UPC on the porch, and occasionally on a porch step, mostly away from the other chickens, as she had come to prefer. When I met Iris this past summer, I agreed to sponsor her for one year. I will hold to this agreement and sponsor her in memory of the millions of hens who will die in cages, egg bound and unnamed, but not forgotten. – Richard Cundari
