POULTRY COMPANY RESUMES STARVATION OF HENS

INFORMATION FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES HUMANELINES, ISSUES 237, MARCH 6TH, 2003:

UPDATE: POULTRY COMPANY RESUMES STARVATION OF HENS:

On Tuesday (3/4), The SPCA of Puerto Rico reported that the Empresas Picú poultry company in Puerto Rico is again allowing tens of thousands of hens to starve to death, likely due to financial difficulties. According to the SPCA of Puerto Rico, 40,000 chickens are dying every day, and at least 100,000 have died so far. This latest development comes in spite of recent assurances from the Puerto Rico Agriculture Department that "no chickens are starving to death" and that it has been "directing considerable time and effort to aide this private company." Now it looks as though the Agriculture Department's temporary assistance has run out, leaving tens of thousands of animals to die a slow, agonizing death by starvation.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Don't let Empresas Picú and the Puerto Rican government get away with duping the public and starving tens of thousands of birds to death! Last time, your thousands of calls, emails, and faxes to the Agriculture Department compelled it to step in and keep the hens alive. We must contact them again to let them know that people around the world are still watching them and to make sure they do not allow these tens of thousands of animals to die of starvation!
