Dear Senator Harris,

I’m encouraged by your stated concern about the damaging effects of “red” meat on health and the environment. Thank you for sharing the concern felt and expressed by an increasing number of informed citizens.

The problem goes far beyond “red” meat and cows, however. We are located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on the Delmarva Peninsula which is dominated by the poultry industry. This industry has been polluting the Chesapeake Bay Area for decades. Over 5,000 industrialized chicken houses and several chicken and turkey slaughtering operations occupy this region to the detriment of residents, workers, the environment, and the birds, who are forced to live sick and lame in filth, including pathogens and toxic gases.

Many of us who have seen your comments about America’s need for improved nutrition and a healthy environment are eager to see these comments implemented into actionable government policies that promote plant-based nutrition. May we count on you? We look forward hopefully to your response.
