“Adopt!” says President Karen Davis of United Poultry Concerns.
Today’s New York Daily News has an informative article in the Lifestyle section about the shipping of day-old chicks to urban chicken keepers.
The article - “Stray chickens came first, then the eggs, for accidental urban farmer,” by Amy Sacks - focuses attention on mail-order hatcheries and the inhumaneness of shipping newborn chicks in boxes without food or water.
UPC President Karen Davis is quoted, “They are unprotected from weather and rough handling and are treated exactly like airplane luggage - left in compartments with no temperature controls on planes that frequently have layovers and delays.”
