4. Live hanging

Workers lift the birds from their crates on a conveyor belt and hang them by their feet on a moving line of hooks called shackles. This is the highest-paying job in the plant. Live hangers earn $8.80 an hour for a day shift and $8.90 an hour for a night shift to contend with the birds, which can peck and scratch. A good live hanger can hang 27 birds a minute. (4 of 14)
