Environmental Ethics & Animal Advocacy: Common Ground”:

Environmentalism offers a salutary challenge to the reductionist logic and homocentric morality of western culture. It provides a context for thinking about animals, originally wild-living and self-sustaining, before being domesticated and industrialized to the point of being proclaimed by the animal food production industry, in the 20th century, as no longer having a place in the natural order. Environmental ethics, with its summons to reunite ourselves with the natural world, is in a position to offer a deeply intuitive epistemology, including an ethical perspective in which to consider the fate of animals reduced to being falsely characterized as nothing more than compliant manifestations of human mastery over nature, mere raw material for humans to impress their own psychic patterns upon.

Together, environmentalists and animal advocates invite consideration of how we view and treat the vulnerable beings in our midst, challenging the conceit that animals subjugated by force of the human will – as epitomized by factory-farmed animals – are less entitled to empathy and justice than other creatures. Thinking holistically enlightens environmentalists and animal advocates alike to the experience of sentient beings of all species with whom we have strong ecological ties as well as close evolutionary and psychological affinities.
