“Thank you Karen for your brilliant, compassionate & unstoppable leadership. Your work lives on. I will miss learning from you. Rest in power.” – Elizabeth Young, Palomacy

“In many ways, Karen was the moral center of the animal advocacy movement. No one was more uncompromising in her political vision, and no one had a more sober, clear-eyed view of the human race and its violent depredations against our fellow beings. Karen eschewed sentimentality, despised pretense, and confined her utterances to the truth. I have never known anyone less willing to engage in the social niceties that placate the human conscience than she. Karen said what needed to be said, and she never apologized for it. She shaped her life to her cause, and that cause was total animal liberation. No one taught me more about the nature of satyagraha or the importance of commitment. It is incumbent upon us all to continue her legacy and learn from the exemplary life she lived.” – John Sanbonmatsu

“Karen’s loss will be felt for decades to come. She was a tireless advocate for birds and a beautiful soul. We will all miss her terribly.” – Twyla Francois

“SAD TO REPORT. Our friend Karen Davis has passed away. I am sure tens of thousands of our friends will agree with me. Karen was the doyen of the ‘chicken world’. She was a remarkable woman. Unforgettable.” – Philip Wollen

This year has been a difficult one for United Poultry Concerns, as we mourn the loss of our organization’s founder, Karen Davis. Her departure has not only impacted those who had the privilege of knowing her personally but has also left a deep sense of sadness within our community.

Karen’s unwavering dedication to the birds and the mission of United Poultry Concerns was truly remarkable. Her passion, advocacy, and tireless efforts have shaping the organization and its commitment to promoting the compassionate treatment of domestic fowl.

We, the team at United Poultry Concerns, are deeply committed to honoring Karen’s legacy. We will carry forward the important work she devoted her life to in creating a more compassionate world for our feathered friends.

For 33 years, we’ve been educating the general public and the animal advocacy community about who chickens and turkeys are when they are not in a condition of abject misery. We vigorously promote a compassionate animal-free diet and lifestyle. Together, our books, articles, campaigns, presentations, and sanctuary in Virginia expose the kinds of suffering these birds endure in farming, cockfighting, and experimental research in contrast to the exuberant flock and family life they enjoy in their natural habitats and in our sanctuary.

We have always sought to show these birds in the light of their natural interests, activities, and sensory & emotional vitality versus their desolation and diseases in institutional captivity. But there is much work still to do.

That is why we unstintingly promote animal-free products and vegan cuisine. Encouragingly, this sector of our economy keeps growing. We are on the frontlines of making this happen and we deeply thank our generous and caring members for sharing our aspirations and furthering our accomplishments.

To help us persevere in our work, please visit www.upc-online.org/donate to contribute. Or simply send your tax-deductible check or money order to UPC, PO Box 150, Machipongo, VA 23405. All gifts in any amount are gratefully received and well spent.

For the birds and all of us at United Poultry Concerns, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support. We wish you joy and wellbeing in 2024.

Our Work for the Birds Depends on Your Support!

Sincerely,
