In memory of Goldie, a wild rooster who escaped from his buyer at the local poultry auction, and he lived in freedom for a year and a half, surviving all seasons and all predators. On auction days, he came to fly up onto the cages to visit those trapped inside. We put out feed and water for him, but no one could get near him. Then last November we found clumps of his golden feathers inside the goat barn where he roosted and we knew he was gone. Goldie was a true survivor, who outlasted many other chickens who escaped to run free at the auction for short times and disappeared one by one. We miss them all, but Goldie was one-of-a-kind! – Barbara Moffit
