Karen Davis will present “Advocating for Chickens and Turkeys Raised for Meat: Bringing Their Hidden Suffering to Light.”

Summary: A fundamental difficulty in drawing attention to the plight of farmed animals is that nearly every situation in which they appear is a mass situation. The misery of these animals is barely perceived by most people, who are not socialized to perceive “food” animals as individuals with feelings.

The problem is most evident with chickens, turkeys and ducks raised for meat. Unlike the more “dramatic” suffering of battery-caged hens beating their wings against cage bars, or of ducks being force-fed with metal tubes to produce foie gras, the suffering of birds raised for meat is largely invisible - hidden inside their genetically-tormented bodies in the vast compounds in which they are confined. A journalist described the chickens he saw in a typical chicken house as “a sea of stationary grey objects.”

How do we get the public to perceive and understand the suffering of the individual bird hidden in “a sea of stationary grey objects”? How do we bring their hidden suffering to light? My talk addresses these questions. Please join us on Sunday morning at 8 AM and learn how you can become a more effective advocate for chickens, turkeys and ducks – the largest number of abused land animals in the world. We look forward to seeing you.
